A disciple of Kalaimamani Guru Smt. Rama Vaidyanathan, Sushmitha began her journey in dance at the tender age of 4. She did her initial training under the able guidance of Gurus. Kiran Subramanyam and Smt. Sandhya Kiran. As a young artist, she has successfully flourished as a beautiful and technically sound dancer. She has in the two+ decades of dancing, evolved into become an artiste who induces her work with critical thought. Sushmitha received critical acclaim at her stellar solo production on the compositions of the poet Sri Narayana Theerthat, at the Youth in Dance Festival by Padmalaya Foundation, Bangalore. Preceeding this was an ever energetic Solo Margam presentation at Sri Krishna Gana Sabha through the Margazhi Season. Having been a part of Smt. Rama Vaidyanathan’s latest group work ‘Storm before the Calm’ at the NCPA, Sushmitha cherishes the journey and the hard work that has brought her this far. She has in her initial years performed extensively as a senior performer of the Rasika Dance Ensemble at several productions and prestigious festivals all over the country.
Adding to her list of accomplishments, Sushmitha has had to opportunity to work with several artists and dance groups in the field like the Aayana Dance Company, Nritarutya, Raadha Kalpa in 'The Dark Lord' choreographed by Rukmini Vijayakumar, ‘Questioning Frontality’ by Vyuti Dance company headed by Aranyani Bhargav, ‘Shastram’ a unique production combining Film, Theatre and Indian classical dance by Ghirija Jeyaraj staged at Perth, Australia. Sushmitha has in the feathers of her hat, a successful solo US tour in 2018 comprising Margam and thematic performances, Workshops and Lecture demonstrations. She is an active performer in the ensemble of Dr. Anita Ratnam on her brainchild ‘Naachiyar Next’ that has a unfailing left audiences spellbound each time, and all over the country. Sushmitha is also a part of the divine annual offering, Kaisiki Natakam by Dr. Anita Ratnam at Tirukurungudi, Tamil Nadu and has continued to work on several other online and offline projects.
Besides performing, Sushmitha founded Vivartana - the art studio in 2017, where she aims at imparting her knowledge of Bharatanatyam to the masses and take our traditional arts forward, relevantly, to the generations to come. She also pioneered the ‘Adavu Meet Up’ in Bangalore and now continues to in Chennai, aiming to bring the dance community together. She has presented several of her solo and group choreographies in India and abroad, through the pandemic and is currently working on several new bodies of work, hoping to contribute a few droplets to this wonderful ocean of art! Besides dancing, Sushmitha is a fitness enthusiast and is also a professional Make up Artist, exclusively for classical dance and brings her unique touch to each client.
